🎓 Germany’s postgraduate enrolment faced a minor decline

Postgraduate enrolment in Germany dipped slightly in 2023 and 2024. Tighter migration conditions and cost pressures are affecting international student inflows, alongside shifting workforce preferences toward immediate employment in high-demand sectors like tech and engineering. Germany’s Skilled Immigration Act reforms aim to stabilise talent pipelines by easing entry for qualified graduates.

🍃 Bulgaria leads the EU in protected land share reaching 45% coverage

Bulgaria led the EU in protected land coverage in 2023. Coverage remains uneven, with Eastern and smaller states leading overall protection levels. Bulgaria’s top ranking reflects extensive Natura 2000 site designations and lower urban land pressure, while countries like Italy and Spain balance conservation with dense economic activity. Growing biodiversity risks and climate targets are pushing expansion efforts across the bloc. The EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, led by the European Commission, aims to protect at least 30% of land.

🏭 iPhone 12 components are primarily sourced from Asia

iPhone 12 component manufacturing was led by South Korea. This distribution highlights a strong Asian concentration, particularly across East Asia’s advanced manufacturing hubs. This reflects deep semiconductor ecosystems in South Korea and Taiwan, cost-efficient assembly in China, and tightly integrated supplier networks built over decades. Rising geopolitical risks are prompting diversification efforts. The US CHIPS and Science Act, led by the US government, aims to rebalance supply chains.
