Among IDEA-eligible students aged 3-5 in the United States in 2024, speech and language impairments account for over 30% of cases. Early identification of speech challenges, autism and delayed learning allows targeted interventions that improve communication skills before children enter primary school. The number of students identified with these disabilities is increasing yearly, reaching nearly 10M, reflecting both the prevalence of early language delays and the emphasis of early childhood programmes on supporting foundational learning. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, implemented by the US Department of Education, ensures access to specialised early services.

🍃 Water usage in the US led by thermoelectric power

In 2023, thermoelectric power accounted for the largest share of water use in the United States, with most of this water used for cooling in power plants. This heavy water demand underscores the energy sector’s reliance on a stable water supply and highlights the critical link between energy production and resource management, particularly during droughts or heat waves. However, water usage for thermoelectric power has been declining in recent years due to the shift from coal-fired to natural gas-fired and renewable generation. Policies such as the US Energy Policy Act guide sustainable water use in power generation, supporting this transition.
